Overall, it got some good and some bad reviews but managed to make a special place in the hearts of real fans. Skip this one and just watch the TV series instead. If it didn’t have the Clannad name, it would be worth watching once. I really can’t recommend anyone watching this. I’m not entirely convinced that I would have perceived it significantly better if I hadn’t watched KyoAni’s adaptation or played the VN, either.

The movie wasn’t great, but it wasn’t terrible either it was pretty mediocre. Just like how Tomoya being depressed and getting over his depression just sort of happens. You can see Sunohara becoming a more mature person, but even that just sort of happens. They were clearly influenced by their visual novel counterparts, but they never really develop. (So yes, they tried to cram in Clannad + After Story in 90 minutes.)Ĭharacters were so-so as well. Girl dies during childbirth, guy falls into depression. They get together after supernatural interference. Delinquent guy meets girl and helps her re-start the drama club. If it weren’t an adaptation, it wasn’t as bad. No girl, no junk doll, no junk bits (scenes from the Illusionary World make flash appearances though, but out of context).Īs said above, this isn’t Clannad’s story. The ‘Illusionary World’ is way different from the one in the VN, containing a clown marionette, a bicycle, and a lone cherry blossom tree. It’s instead replaced by a magical cherry blossom tree (reminds me of Da Capo…) that connects Nagisa to Tomoya. The lights of Hikarizaka make an appearance early in the film, but don’t actually have any meaning beyond referencing the VN. The supernatural elements used in the film was weak. The new music wasn’t bad, but it was inferior to that of the visual novel.
There were only two instrumental tracks that were used in the VN that made it into the film. There’s a lot of new music in the series. This is true of every character in the movie, at least, those that manage to make an appearance. Kotomi has one appearance as the conductor for the school choir, rather than being the quiet, secluded girl in the library. Tomoyo becomes student council president without the help of Okazaki and Sunohara, but with Kyou’s. She’s not the shy character that Okazaki grows attached to she has initiative, and doesn’t need motivation from external sources (despite what she says). Nagisa’s personality is totally different. Really the thing that kills this movie is that there was plenty of good material in the visual novel that it completely disregards. Almost none of the events from the source material made it into the movie. Characters are the same in name and appearance only personalities and relationships are different. The nicest thing I can say about this is that it isn’t Clannad’s story. I finished the visual novel earlier this week, and figured that I might as well watch the movie. I had put off watching this movie for a couple years now.
